Related to my previous post today , I just took a walk around the block on this unseasonably warm winter's day (sorry East coasters. The picture below is for you as a reminder) with Stan Amy, one of the very originals in the sustainable retail space. You know those people you meet and within seconds you realise that they may be one of the smartest people you've ever met? And they are super humble. That's Stan Amy.
Stan founded Nature's, a chain of natural grocery stores here in Portland in the mid 80's. 10 years on, he sold to GNC which then sold it on to Wild Oats. He then went on to start the highly successful New Seasons Market with Brian Rohter and Chuck Eggert. The chain now boasts 10 stores and they were our launch partner in 2005.
So we had a good walk and a good talk on all matter of things green business and other stuff. We reflected on Seventh Generation's recent hiccup, the role of founders as businesses mature, the state of America's schools and healthcare etc etc etc. It's amazing what you learn from those who've done it all before.
A most valuable hour!
