One of Lake Oswego Youth Rugby's Grade 5/6 teams won the State Championships last weekend. After finishing the regular season in 4th place, the Musketeers faced an undefeated Portland West Crusaders in the Semi Finals.
After regular play, the game was tied up 20-all so we went into sudden death extra time. After losing the toss and kicking the ball off, the Musketeeers regained possession and Alex, one of our wingers scored a try to win.
After a two hour break, the team lined up against the Bombers - last year's Champions and a team they had not yet encountered. The Bombers were brimming with talent and coached well by a fellow Aussie.
Kick off and the kids were extremely focused. They managed to run in 4 tries in 10 minutes. At the break and up 20 - nil, we had a good huddle and the team went back out to seal the deal. They let two quick tries in and then spent the rest of the half defending grimly on their own line. They eventually won possession but were still unable to get out of the try zone. Thanks to safe passes and a good eye, our winger Caitlin found the gap and scored a length of the field try right on fulltime, completing a 25 - 10 victory. The kids were elated!
Scoring 50 points over two games was a remarkable effort as was the fact that the Musketeers include 4 girls who featured prominently all season and particularly this past weekend. Their opposition on the day were all-boy teams.
We farewelled Alex who is moving to Sweden by making him Captain for the day. He made a great speech at the presentation.
That night I took them all to California Pizza Kitchen for a celebration dinner.
Until next season!
