Kim and Fynn just after we arrived in the US in September 2004
Fynn showing his true colours.
Mum making sure her first Grandson was enjoying the States.
September is a month Kim and I pause to reflect as it was this month six years ago that we left Australia and moved to the US to launch gDiapers. 2004 was quite the year. On top of the usual hurdles of getting a business off the ground, we found out at the last minute that to get our work visas, Kim had to become an Australian citizen, delaying our departure. Like all good start-ups we were running on the smell of an oily rag. Fynn, our number one son's 2nd birthday (9/9/2002) was looming. If we didn't get our visas in time we would have to fork over an extra $2,000 for his plane ticket (kids fly free under 2). And then of course there was his actual birthday party to arrange. Everything came together. We had Kim's citizenship at the local Council Chambers. She saluted the same Queen she did as a Canuck but the song's a bit different and she was given a eucalyptus tree! We hastily brought Fynn's birthday party forward and got on the plane the day before his big day!
And then there was our trusty dog, Mohican. We had to get his shots done and put him on an earlier flight. He had a layover in LA...assuming he took in the sites before getting back on the plane. We had to cold call vets in Portland and ask if someone could go to the airport and pick the big fella up. We arrived two days later and he was one happy puppy!
Lot's of great memories.
And the journey continues. As married co-founders, it is a complex web of work, family, all in a (now not so foreign) land. Take today. I get up at 2am to get some running in and look at that, Kim is up catching up on stuff. The days are long but we love it and wouldn't change a thing.
Below is my first blog post a few days after we landed:
Walking back from the our local cafe just now (yes, we DID by an espresso machine but I have not attended the required in-service!!) I bumped into two classes from our on-site child development center. So cute seeing them all. Always a great feeling when a plan (onsite child development center from Day One, no matter what happens) comes together.
Today the original gBaby (son #1 Fynn) turns 8! What a trip it's been...
The original in an original. One chunky monkey.
That was one lonely on-site daycare when we first arrived in the US in 2004. But the dog was a terrific Nanny and everyone survived.
Our first US home / office (thank you Craigslist) with Fynn at the helm. Love the "Pro Con" notes...
Game face on game day.
Early signs the kid likes threads.
With gMum Kim.
