The Department of State staffer kindly explained to Kim that the forms were old and that the new ones needed to be signed by me (who was back in Portland) and notarised in triplicate in a sans serif font, 10 point size on Egyptian parchment.
"But we downloaded these forms from your website" Kim replied.
"Well, they are old, so you will need to drive back to Portland and come back another day. And yes dear , I know your travelling to Australia in 3 days but I am sure you can understand our predicament, what with international terror. What a cute baby you have, Did he cry the 2 hours all the way here in the car? Isn't that a shame. Have a nice day".
Cue angry Canadian.
Kim asked whether the US Government's internet was in fact old and needed upgrading...and if that was the case what hope did the country have of fighting terrorism - as opposed to "terror" which is in fact a noun. How can you wage war against a noun? Especially with Internet 2.0 instead of the current Internet 2.1? Kim continued and somehow managed to persuade them to accept our "Sept 10" forms.
So now between the 4 of us, we have 6 passports from the EU, US, Canada and Australia. This will make the escape from the Empire that much easier when the wheels really start falling off.
